Biography

Professor Thurston researches and teaches a course on Joseph Smith and the law, with particular emphasis on the Nauvoo period. He is a member of the editorial team of the Joseph Smith Papers Project (Legal Series) and has lectured and published on a variety of legal issues involving the founding Mormon prophet. Prior to becoming a member of the adjunct faculty at BYU, Professor Thurston was a senior litigation partner in the global law firm of Latham & Watkins, focusing on trademark and copyright law. Professor Thurston joined Latham upon graduating from Harvard Law School in 1970 and retired from the practice of law in 2005. He and his wife, Dawn, are co-authors of a book on life story writing and frequently lecture on that subject. They have four children and live in Villa Park, California.
